I am grateful this morning for the opportunity to remind my nine-year-old daughter about what we observe on Good Friday. She asked me what Good Friday was about, and although she knows the gospel and has heard all of this before, her young mind is gaining understanding and making more and more connections as she gets older. She was saddened to tears by the reminder of what Christ endured.
I held my baby girl in my arms seeking the words to comfort her. All I could do was ponder all that we gained from Christ’s willingness to face the worst. Hebrews 2:14 states:
“By His death He might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.”
I am so thankful today for all of the benefits I have access to because Jesus Christ chose to die with me as His purpose for doing so:
- Because He died, we do not have to be afraid of death.
- We get to live in freedom because the devil’s power (the sting of death) has been broken. We still live as wise, not as unwise (or foolish).
- We are not bound to sin; we can choose to do right (Ro 6:6) because Christ died for us.
- We don’t have to compromise our values, integrity, faith and so on – because what can man do to me (Psalm 118:6-7).

We observe both loss and gain today because of the sacrifice Christ made for us. May we make choices and live a life that honors his sacrifice and all of the other people for whom His gift was also made.
Have a Good Friday!
